Accessibility
We want this site to work for everyone, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard on its own, or a browser with images or scripting turned off. We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
What we have done
These are things the site actually does, each one checked rather than assumed:
- Every piece of text on the site is measured against its background and meets the 4.5:1 contrast ratio, or 3:1 where the text is large.
- The whole site works with a keyboard alone, and the item you are on always shows a visible focus ring.
- There is a "skip to main content" link at the top of every page.
- Every page works with JavaScript switched off. The menu, the kitten cards and the photo galleries are ordinary links underneath.
- Photographs carry alternative text describing the cat and, where it matters, the context.
- Headings run in order and describe the section beneath them, so a screen reader can be used to navigate the page.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, the site stops animating.
- Pages are laid out for a phone first and hold up when text is enlarged.
Where we know it falls short
Two honest limits. Some photographs are portrait pictures taken on a phone and are cropped to fit their frame, so a little of the original picture is not visible. And we do not control the sites we link to, such as the breed registries and our social media pages, so we cannot speak for how accessible those are.
